Dendrites are dispensable for basic motoneuron function but essential for fine tuning of behavior.

Dendrites are highly complex 3D structures that define neuronal morphology and connectivity and are the predominant sites for synaptic input. Defects in dendritic structure are highly consistent correlates of brain diseases. However, the precise consequences of dendritic structure defects for neuronal function and behavioral performance remain unknown. Here we probe dendritic function by using genetic tools to selectively abolish dendrites in identified Drosophila wing motoneurons without affecting other neuronal properties. Gender differences in the effects of haloperidol on avoidance conditioning in mice

Abstract Gender differences in the effects of haloperidol (0.07S mg/kg per day for 5 days) on avoidance conditioning were evaluated. We also studied performance of the subjects free of the drug and the acute effects of haloperidol in animals trained without drug 48 h after the last haloperidol administration. Latencies of escape and avoidance responses, number of nonresponses, escapes, avoidances, crossings during the adaptation period, crossings during intertrial intervals, and total crossings per minute were analyzed. Longitudinal assessment of health-span and pre-death morbidity in wild type

The increase in human life expectancy is accompanied by age-related cognitive and motor disability, thus raising the demand for strategies toward healthy aging. This requires understanding the biology of normal aging and late-life functional phenotypes. Genetic model organisms, such as Drosophila melanogaster, can help identifying evolutionary conserved mechanisms underlying aging. Visual search in three-dimensional non-medical images: visual-motor performance of radiologists

The visual search abilities of radiologists are systematically trained due to the specifics of their professional tasks. We investigated whether the visual-motor performance of radiologists, residents and students varied when searching non-medical targets on the volumetric display. As a result, no significant differences were found in the correct response rate among three groups. However, the total number of interactions was considerably higher for the resident radiologists and medical students comparing to the experienced radiologists.
